Sonia on the way to hat-trick

IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 19, 2009]

The curly haired dusky lass Sonia shot to fame as Shrav’s in ‘Happy Days’. After the debut film, ‘Vinayakudu’, the runaway hit that featured her in the lead cast moved her to near stardom.

With two consecutives in her bag, it’s no wonder when offers queued up for the actress. With a distinct approach to script selection, Sonia didn’t sign up every other one but only selected the best.

She has checked in for a new film set to begin under the direction of Jonnalagadda Srinivasa Rao.

If she succeeds again, it will be a hat-trick for the newcomer who’s making it big already in tinsel town. We can rub off any more doubts and be sure she will be the future star in Tollywood.

Meera wants one for Tamil

Meera Jasmine is bubbling with joy these days. A proud winner of the national award this year, Meera Jasmine is busy making her comeback in Kollywood through Kasthoori Maan directed by her mentor Lohitha Dass.

"I am overjoyed for the fact that my comeback movie in Tamil has more scope for me to perform. Acting in a heroine-oriented movie is always a pleasure", she says.

A quick chat with Meera Jasmine, who is busy shooting in Chennai for Kasthoori Maan.
On receiving the national award this year?

I never expected that I would bag the coveted award. When I was informed of my selection, I was busy shooting for a movie. Messages congratulating me poured from various corners of the country. It was an enthralling moment.

Describe those moments when you received the award from President A P J Abdul Kalam?

I was speechless in joy when I received the award. I whispered to the President that I am a great fan of his. He blessed me to win more such awards in future. It was great moment for me for I had the opportunity to interact with great stalwarts in Indian cinema like Rituparno Ghosh, Gowtham Gosh and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Why a big gap in Tamil?

I did not get good stories here. I am resolved to do only quality movies here. My preference is only for those movies where I have a good role to play. I was asked to play heroine in movies including Ghajini, Kana Kanden, Priyasaki. However, I declined the offers.

Comment on your role in Kasthoori Maan?

I play a self-sacrificing homely character. I toil for the betterment of those around me.. The entire movie revolves around my character. The movie has so far shaped up well.

How do you choose your movies?

I carefully listen to the story. My role should be meaty and at the same time should create a positive impact among the audience.

Your future aspirations?

I have won National award for best actress for a Malayalam movie. My desire is to win the award again for a Tamil movie. I am confident that one day I would realize this dream.

"I wanted to be part of something bigger" - A.R. Rahman

A.R. Rahman has just released the single Pray For Me Brother and the song has almost become a rage now, at least amongst those who have been deeply affected by the huge emotional quotient of the number and are relating to the stunning visuals of the imaginative video.

In the DVD version of the song, Rahman talks about the project which is close to his heart and how the entire music and its video took shape.
How did the project happen?

It all happened 3 years back when I was composing for the Broadway version of 'Bombay Dreams'. There were lots of things happening around with different kind of music being composed and I was wondering what was I doing?

I thought that I should be a part of something bigger with a human contribution to the world. I went through a few hospitals in New York, London, New Delhi etc. and while I was just waking by, I could almost sense people dying and asking "Pray For Me, I am dying" or "Pray For Me, I Am Suffering". Immediately I called up Blaaze [co-lyricist and rapper] and asked him if he could do a song on this concept.

Finally we had a version where it was pretty acceptable and I could relate to it and "Pray For Me' was born. Then we found an extraordinary visionary in the form of Bharatbaala with whom I had worked earlier on the event of India's 50th independence anniversary for 'Vande Mataram'.

Purpose of the song "Pray For Me Brother"

The song is aimed at inspiring the governments and the people to make a change. This may not happen immediately but at least the process needs to start now in aid of the United Nations Millennium development goal to eradicate poverty by 2015

First time a song written in English

The song is written in English since the basic idea of the song came in English. Also it is supposed to be the international version of the anthem song. When the song was written, I shared it with a colleague and he came back exclaiming "What a superb line!". When I asked him which one, he said "Are you searching for a reason to be kind". This is it. Instead of ending the song with "Pray For Me Brother", I had the one mentioned by my colleague as the one which now comes in the end. Somehow now it almost seems like a perfect ending.

Idea of the video

We were just toying around ideas of what the videos should look like. We could have gone the serious route by showing miserable people; suffering people but then that was not the way we needed it to be since this was done too many times. We wanted more friendly video to be watched by the people. We jammed and thought around why should the video be shot only in India, Africa or somewhere else? Why not America? So we selected that as the place where we could show these huge skyscrapers with signs of modernity and progress on one end and a beggar on the platform; something that I see in Manhattan. There was an idea about this couple who are almost splitting and there the man sees huge hoardings with people with extraordinary expressions who almost seem to be talking through the pictures. Bala then came up with some real magical moments!

The video was scheduled at number of places like Manhattan, Tokyo, London but every time the plan got canceled. Finally got a call and was told that "Pack your bags and catch a flight to LA". I reached there and caught some eye problem due to which I had to wear specs. Now I am never comfortable wearing those but was forced to do. so It almost looked like an attitude with the specs on in the music video but it eventually turned out to be falling well with the video. Then there was this shoot in the desert and Bala always likes to put some huge fans to make my hair fly. We didn't need them eventually since there was a huge storm and made the flow come naturally.

Rahman's own foundation

"Pray For Me Brother' is the first humble step that I have taken in creating a song in a hope that inspires and changes the attitude towards poor people.

Vedhika: I am a friendly person

Vedhika, who completed her education in London, had a penchant for dance and acting right from childhood. She entered into the tinsel town to satiate her thirst towards the arts. She made her debut as heroine through Sivakasi. She then paired up with popular choreographer-turned-director and artiste Raghava Lawrence in Muni. The Telugu and Tamil versions of this film are ready for release on March 9.

Vedhika, in an exclusive chat with Indiaglitz, shared her experiences and opened up about her background, hobbies, life and so on. Over to Vedhika.
Tell us about your family background

I stay with my mother and my younger brother. Basically I am from Mumbai, but I did my studies in the US and UK. I finished B.Sc in Business Administration and did M.Sc in marketing in London. My mother is very cooperative and I love fighting with my little brother everyday. I love my family.

What are your hobbies?

I love basketball, badminton and I also like dancing. I like classical dance as well. I used to participate in cultural programmes like dancing, singing, games and sports besides acting, right from my school days.

Tell us about your favourite artistes and films.

My favourite artiste is none other than the Big B Amitabh Bachchan and King Khan Shahrukh Khan. Both are not just great performers but they are also very compassionate and are good human beings. In south, I love Kamal Hassan and Chiranjeevi. They are brilliant actors and have a great screen presence. They are versatile and can play any kind of role and that is one reason why I like them lots.

When it comes to actresses, I love the evergreen Sridevi. She was capable of performing any role with utmost ease and she her portrayals have been absolutely natural and realistic. In fact, she is my role model and I got inspired to get into acting because of her. About my favourite films, well, I love movies like Chandramukhi, Black, Mughal-e-Azam, Sadma and so on.

Your thoughts on love?

If you love someone sincerely, express it immediately. When in love, you have to be courageous enough. I believe that if you do not have the nerve, then there is no point in even uttering the word ‘love.’

Did you nurture dreams of becoming an actor even during your younger days?

Yes. I have always loved acting and dancing right from my school and college days. Many of my friends advised me to try my luck in films. In fact, I was also confident about my proficiency in dancing and acting, so I too evinced an interest to turn heroine. I gave it a serious thought, tried my best and now I am here.

How did your debut film 'Madarasi' happen?

After I completed my studies abroad and returned to India, Arjun once chanced upon me and asked about my willingness to enter films. I accepted his offer, a photo shoot soon followed and later I was selected after a formal screen test.

On working with established artistes like Arjun and Lawrence in your first and second films…

I feel very happy. I had myself nurtured ambitions of getting into the film industry, but it happened through Arjun. I didn’t have to try hard to grab a chance in films. Even before the release of my debut film ‘Madarasi,’ Lawrence looked at my photos and gave me a chance to act opposite him in ‘Muni.’ I thank both of them for giving me such good opportunities.

Tell us about Muni.

It is a very different film. Such subjects are quite unique and I strongly feel that such films would rarely appear on the screen. It is a fantastic subject and has good scope for dance.

What about your character in the film?

I am playing the role of Priya, the love interest of Lawrence. It is a very good character with shades of western and Indian culture. It is a two dimensional character. As I already told you, the character has a lot of scope for dance. It is a very good character and has all the elements that a heroine would expect in a film. I have got such an opportunity in my second film itself. I think I am lucky for having got a chance to work in this film.

Tell us about Lawrence.

Lawrence is a very good choreographer and is also a good director. His dance in this film is quite wonderful. He has done a great job in this movie. I liked working with him, and felt very happy while doing the character.

How about music and the producer of this film?

Ramani Bharadwaja has given melodious tunes that suit the dance beats of a choreographer like Lawrence. Dancers usually get all the more excited if there is good music to complement their steps. While shooting, we enjoyed the music to a great extent, and enjoyed dancing to the tunes.

The producer Saran was very cooperative and helped complete the film without any disturbance. The shoot happened as per schedule because of him. Manyam Ramesh is dubbing the film in Telugu and he is also a very good producer and is quite cooperative. I believe that 'Muni' would give him a good break as a producer.

Which kind of characters do you want to do in future?

I love all the usual, common characters. I am not particular about doing different characters but then, I am ready to do any kind of role that comes my way. My main aim is to do good commercial characters.

Any dream roles?

I would like to do a dual role subject. Both characters should not be identical and should have distinctive contrasts. At the same time, I have another dream role. I would love to play a negative character and get critical acclaim.

How would you rate yourself as an artiste?

Vedhika is definitely a good artiste! As I told you, I have been involved in many cultural activities right from my schooldays and I have always earned good name. Even on the celluloid, I have earned a good name as a good artiste. Of course, I would like to keep working as far as performance is concerned.

What kind of a person is Vedhika?

Vedhika is a good person, a good human being, a good dancer and above all, she is a friendly person!
