How is it that someone is suspected of murdering her roommate yet at the same time voted “Person of the Year” in a poll by an Italian TV station, beating out Italian-born French First Lady, supermodel Carla Bruni?
Such is the mystery that is Amanda Knox, or, as she has been dubbed by the Italian media, “Foxy Knoxy.” Amanda is a 21-year-old American college student from Seattle, Washington, whose trial for murder in Perugia, Italy has attracted a cult following and given her almost pop star status.
Amanda and her former boyfriend Rafaelle Sollecito, 24, are accused of sexually assaulting and murdering one of her roommates, a British exchange student named Meredith Kercher. Meredith allegedly was killed because she refused to participate in a drug-fueled sex game. “Foxy Knoxy” allegedly poked her with a knife while Rafaelle held her by her wrists and a third man, Rudy Hermann Guede sexually assaulted her.
The Italian media have become enthralled with Foxy Knoxy and her case, with lines out the door of the courthouse, and 86 media outlets sending 140 journalists to cover the opening of the trial in January.
So why is Knoxy so Foxy? She is often portrayed as a “femme fatale” and has a dark past documented in her uncovered diaries, and stories she posted online, including one called “Baby Brother” which describes a man named Edgar discussing the drugging and raping of a young girl with his brother Kyle.
Testimony closes next month. What will be the fate of Foxy? [Source: CNN, The Daily Mail; Photos: MySpace]
